Help! I found a tick on my dog! What do I do?

Welcome to Minnesota. If you're not from here, then you should know that this is the buggiest, creepiest, crawliest place that I have ever lived. Yes, it's gross to find a tick attached firmly to your best friend. Grit your teeth, grab the tick up against the skin and pull it out. You can crush the tick with a rock or put it down the toilet, choose your method of destruction.

Now what? Shouldn't you be doing something to prevent infection?
Hopefully by now you are already feeding your dog a raw food diet and giving supplements at least occasionally, such as probiotics, essential fatty acids, and enzymes. That is your basic foundation for health.

Ticks can leave a nasty bite. The bite of the tick alone can be toxic, even without the added bounty of tick-borne diseases. Sometimes a large welt develops with an open wound on the top where the tick was attached. There is even a condition called "tick paralysis," which is solved by removing the tick.

A tick bite is not an reason to reach for an antibiotic. If you feel that you need to treat the wound, you can use a solution of half water, half vinegar, and soak it onto the spot with a cotton ball. Blot gently to dry, and repeat 2-3 times a day for two or three days, and it will heal.
But what if the tick was attached for a while? What if my dog has already contracted a disease from this tick?
There is no way to test a tick to see what diseases it might be carrying, or to determine what it might have transmitted to your dog.

Want a quick boost for the immune system? Give echinacea for a week, or spirulina, or bee pollen. Any of these provide a wealth of antioxidants and minerals to support the immune system in doing what it needs to do to protect the interior of the body. There is no specific dose for these supplements, so use about 1/8 teaspoon for little dogs, 1/4 teaspoon for medium sized dogs (up to about 60 lbs., say), and 1/2 teaspoon for large dogs.

You can also give a dose of homeopathic Ledum, in 30C or 200C potency, to counteract adverse effects from the tick bite.

If symptoms do develop, schedule a visit with your local holistic vet to find the right treatment protocol and homeopathic remedy for your dog. Liver and immune system support are necessary, as well as finding the right remedy that matches your dog's symptoms.

Here is a recent case that I treated: A young dog presented with a mild fever and shifting leg lameness. This means that the dog was mildly lame in one hind leg for a couple of days, and then it seemed to be the other hind leg that was lame. His temperature was 103.2. Normal dog temp is 100.5-102.5.
He was still eating and drinking, but was quieter than normal and preferring to stay in bed, rather than play with the other dogs. Out in the yard he stood in one spot, instead of running around.
Bryonia is the homeopathic remedy for symptoms that are so painful, you would rather not move at all. Because the dog was already raw fed and on health-supporting supplements, a 200C potency was chosen and given three times a day for the next three days. By then he was back to normal and the remedy was stopped.
If he had not been on a raw food diet, a raw diet with supplements would have been started immediately and the remedy given in the 30C potency.
it's important to understand that Bryonia is not a remedy for Lyme disease, or any other tick borne disease. In other cases I have used Natrum muriaticum, Rhus toxicodendron, and other remedies, depending on which one fits the symptom picture the closest.

I've heard that it's good to save the tick in a plastic bag with a moist paper towel so it can be identified as a deer tick or not in case of illness. Is this helpful to the doc or not?

That is one of the problems you will constantly encounter when you have a dog. Ticks and fleas do not just go away because there will always be a specific time of the year where fleas and ticks would come out. There are many ways you can eliminate them, though. You can use an anti flea and tick spray for both your dog and your environment. I suggest you use Frontline Plus Fipronil Spray which is very effective and recommended by many veterinarians. It costs about 10 to 12 dollars for 250ml product and each use can last for three to four weeks. Anti tick and flea dog collar would also help prevent ticks and fleas from biting into your dog's body. Aside from that, there are chewable tablets that your dog can eat, which contain ingredients that repel fleas and ticks.

Removing the tick from the dog can never be inviting. However, it is significant to do it expeditiously and accurately. Because the ticks carry communicable organisms. Thus, if the ticks present in the dog for a considerable period of time, then it can cause him sick. By using a pair of tweezers you can remove the tick from your dog's body. I think this is the most usual and effectual way to remove the tick. But if you not confident enough to do the task on your own, then you should the help of a skilled veterinarian to remove the ticks from your canine friend. By veterinary consultation, you can know the right preventives that you can also take to keep your dog safe from the infectious ticks.

When you pull a tick off, as described, you will often break the head ( embedded in the skin) from the body. This can lead to infections and severe sores. The old remedy, practice on Boy Scouts and on field dogs, was to singe the rear of the tick with a flame or cigarette. It would release and back out, and could be scraped off. FWIW, YMMV.

I would strongly recommend using homeopathic remedies: Staphysagria and Sulphur. I have recently used it as per the guidance provided in this article:
https://hpathy.com/veterinary-homeopathy/a-case-of-tick-infestation-in-a-dog
It's miraculous. My 1.5 year old Golden Retriever boy Sunny is tick free from last 1.5 months! I have posted my review on the above site too.

Great article! Brand new to your website so thank you. You made this comment, “ There is no way to test a tick to see what diseases it might be carrying, or to determine what it might have transmitted to your dog.”

Actually, there is a lab near us who will test for the various diseases from a tech. If you capture the live tick you take it in, even if it’s Dead/dried up they can still test it. They told me it’s the most accurate way of testing what a tick might pass on, so that tells you what your potential exposure is or your dogs exposure. Are you aware of this?

** Also, I’m very curious how Staphysagria and Sulphur Will prevent tick bites, at least that’s what it sounds like. Or maybe just makes the tix drop off if they are on the animal? Very interesting because I just researched what to give a family member who had a painful stye, and these were on the list.

Hi Anne, I have personally used this formula. I don't have to use sulphur anymore. Just staphysagria Q does the job! I don't know what it does, but as far as I am concerned it works miracles! Zero ticks. If ever the infestation starts, I repeat the staphysagria and ticks simply disappear. Nothing to lose in trying it out! Refer to the article above. I now consult Dr. Sherwani for all issues related to my dog and he is working miracles on him! He is an amazing homeopathy doctor. He provides solutions over email to me even though i am across the world in India and he in the US! Good luck..

When you say 30 C or 200C, should I be giving 6 or 7 of the 30C tablets to get the dose close to 200C? Please answer asap because my dog needs right away.

Hi Pegeen, whether it be 30c or 200c you still give the same amount of pills. The recommended number is 4 pills. But even if you give 6-7 its not going to create any problems.

Hi Pegeen, I had replied to your comment previously however on reading it again, I realized I may not have answered it clearly.
30c and 200c are different potency (strength) of the homeopathic pills. They are not like allopathic meds where taking 2 tablets of 250 mg is equal to 1 tablet of 500 mg. Homeopathy does not work that way. 30c potency is always going to remain 30c no matter how many pills you may give. Same way 200c is going to remain 200c no matter how many pills you may give whether 1 or 10. The reason you give 4 pills and not one is because they are very small in size most of the times. So to ensure an effective distribution.. You give 4 pills. Either put it under your dogs tongue or better still open your dogs's lip from the side and drop the pills there. Hope that resolves your doubts.

Dear Kaushal, am tired of constant tick infestations and nothing seems to work.

Can I give the above 2 medicines irrespective of the age of the dog?

Also - which of the these two medicines can I dilute and apply on the skin? I read that it is one of those in tincture form.

Also. .do I work with tablets or tinctures..for these 2 medicines?

If your dental practice marketing efforts do not currently target Google Places, you are losing out in a big way; and, in the process, forfeiting a lot of free and easy-to-win business to other dentists who are either lucky - in some markets simply having a Google Places Page with the right keyword in the title is good enough to get traffic - or who have at least made a modicum level of effort to ensure that Google Places is a core part of their dental practice marketing efforts. Google Places could easily be the best investment of time and effort any dental practice marketing practitioner makes - be it a do-it-yourself dentist-as-marketer or a consultant or agency that offers dental practice marketing services - for three very good reasons.

Hi Vandana, you can use Sulphur and staphysagria in pills or liquid. I have found pills easier to use. Not much experience with how many drops to give in liquid. Since the pills are sweet our dogs eat them easily.
For washing the body you want to use Staphysagria Q (mother tincture). About 10-20 drops in 1 liter water. The other thing I have found useful is Baker's yeast. I give my dog 1 spoon, once a week. I give it in the food or directly. I bought from Amazon, you can buy locally or Amazon any brand. https://www.amazon.in/dp/B097GV21SG
